3 Ways To Be More Productive Than Ever!

It’s a new year! We are all full of high hopes and aspirations to make this year better than all of the previous ones. One of the best ways, in my opinion, is to be more productive. If you get more done, you have more time. More time to do the things you love to do and to spend time with the people you love to be with. Here are a few of my best productivity secrets to make 24 hours seem longer than it ever has… in a good way.

1. Tell People You’re Busy – If you always stop what you’re doing to do something else, you’ll never get anything done. Let people know what you’re working and let them know that you will be working on it for a set amount of time. This keeps them from stopping you in the middle of your work and lets you stay on track.

2. Set Concrete Goals – Don’t leave any of your goals in the grey area. Things like “if I feel productive I will” or “If I’m not too busy I will” won’t do. Set a specific number for your goals. “When I finish 10 reports” or “I’ll leave no later than 5:30″. This way you have a better idea of how to plan and prioritize for the day.

3. Recharge Before You Really NEED To – Don’t let yourself burnout. If you get the point of exhaustion or where you just don’t care you wont get anything done. Take a break and even get a snack before you feel like you’re going to crash. This helps you keep up the momentum for the day, week, month etc.

Why Self Promotion Is Ruining Your Career

You have to promote yourself for people to know who you are, what you do and what you’re all about right? Well, that’s a yes and no answer. It really depends on your definition of the word ‘promote’. If by promoting you mean talking to people, developing meaningful relationships and giving value, promote all you want. If by promoting you mean trying to turn every interaction into a transaction STOP NOW!  Here are a few ways that the wrong self promotion can or might be hurting you.

1. You Are Isolating Others and Disrupting Their Performance – Promoting yourself lets everyone know who you’re thinking about and discourages team collaboration. Some people think it promotes a little “healthy competition” but in reality it prevents real team work from ever happening.

2. You’re Never Really You – When you spend so much time and energy promoting yourself you tend to forget who you actually are. Instead you are replaced by the cheesy salesperson side of you that no one really likes.

3. Your Not Actually Helping The Company You Work For – If you are spending all of your time promoting yourself and you aren’t contributing to a team and you are bringing the initial traits that got you hired to the tabel, what use are you to the company. Instead of selling an idea or a product you are trying to sell yourself and that doesn’t actually make you better at any job the company needs you to do.

Be A Creature Of Highly Effective Habits

Leadership is a trait and a skill that is valued in any person in any position. So how do you know if you’re a leader or not?  Being “in charge” doesn’t necessarily make you a leader. Here are 3 habits of highly effective leaders that you should look for in yourself.

1. Leaders ask the questions that no one else is asking. They look beyond the minimum information that they need to know and dig for more. Part of this stems from their natural curiosity but part of this also comes from their drive to be more than average.

2. Leaders can look at anything from several different perspectives. They are able to listen and actually understand other’s points of view. This lets them combine different perspectives to produce the best solution or outcome.

3. Leaders create a usable system. People like to break things down into little parts. Leaders like to combine those different systems to open up new possibilities.

Something to keep in mind is that all leaders do make mistakes, in fact, all people make mistakes. The difference is how handle the situation after it’s said and done. Leaders always learn from their mistakes and approach them as an opportunity to grow.

John F. Kennedy wrote that “leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” The good leaders (almost) never forget this.

Weird Ways To Be A Better Speaker

Even though I’m used to public speaking, I am always looking for ways to improve. In fact, I like to take that approach to almost everything I do. I know that I can always be better so I make an effort to keep getting better. I came across a good article from Inc. Magazine with a few good tips that I have never tried before and I thought I would share them with all of you.

1. Share the Rare – Most speakers have a story of triumph that they share to get people motivated and most people expect to hear that story and also the positive outcome that comes with it. Try something else. Try telling a story that really hits some emotions for you and your audience and don’t bring them back around like you always do. Let those emotions swell to help build a stronger relationship between you and your audience.

2. Use Silence to Get Their Attention – If you pause for 1-3 seconds the audience might think you forgot what you were going to say, if you pause for 5 seconds they start to think you did it on purpose. If you pause for longer, everyone playing with their smart phones will start paying attention.

3. Find One Thing That No One Knows –  People will take away ideas from your speech but they will actually talk about facts. Do your research and find something out that they would never learn if you didn’t tell them. That little bit of information makes you memorable and valuable, instantly.

Grinch Free Is The Way To Be

You already have your entire family and all of your friends to worry about this holiday season. Have you even started thinking about your customers?  Of course, you will be worried about what to say, how to celebrate and not over or under-playing the holiday cheer. Well I say Cheer Up!  You can stress less because I found a few good solutions for the pre-emptive holiday worry. Pick and choose from these professional and appropriate approaches to celebrate the holidays with your customers and/or clients.

1. Simplify Things With A Card – Pick a tasteful and simple card that takes the approach of “Happy Holidays” versus “Merry Christmas”.  You could even design your own holiday cards with an office picture and a personal message.

2. Go with a gift – None of your customers will be upset when they receive a thoughtful and useful present from you. You can’t go wrong with gift baskets, treats, coffee or wine. If you really wanted to get creative, think of something that will make their lives easier in the office. You are sure to have heard them complain about something so fix one of their problems.

3. Host an event – Your party doesn’t have to bee over the top but something nice, personal and practical would be a nice sentiment and offering. It also helps tighten the relationship between you and your customer base. Don’t let your team make this into a sell-a-thon. Make sure they know that it’s about building the relationship and not about getting more business.

Why It Pays To Be The Early Bird

Several studies have shown that waking up early ties in close to success. Here are a few reasons why that might be true.  I found a great slideshow on Forbes about some of these benefits and some of them were pretty surprising.

1. Get Better Grades – Students who consider themselves “morning people” earned a GPA that was on average a full point higher than people who did not.

2. Be More Proactive – People who wake up earlier tend to have a better sense of the direction they want their life to go and feel like they have more control over how it gets there.

3. Be More Prepared – Early birds are more likely to anticipate problems and handle them with more ease.

4. Get More Organized – Having a little extra time in the morning allows you to organize your day or even your week and really allows you to optimize time spent.

5. Get Fit – Many successful people get their workouts in the early hours of the morning. This wakes up your body and your brain and gives you more energy overall.

Is Hard Work Really Enough?

Getting to work early and staying late, unfortunately, isn’t enough to ensure your future success anymore. Don’t worry, hope is not lost. There are still several things you can do to make sure that you achieve your goals for success.

1. Build important and high-trust relationships – Your new job is to build strong relationships with the people who will help you succeed. think of it as making “the right” friends. Friends who will encourage you and listen to you instead of friends who will complain and bring you down.

2. Teach others to show your own commitment  - If you take the time to mentor others, you are showing your superiors that you care about how the company grows and not just how you grow in the company.

3. Play a key role in the company culture – Take the time to figure out your company’s culture and then figure out where you can fit yourself into it, not just for the sake of fitting in but to help it grow to its full potential.
